Perfected By Passion BatchHouse Distillery is Sifting the Colorado Horizon
“It started off as a passion project, just a hobby really,” Greg Norris, CEO and Master Distiller at BatchHouse Distillery, shares about his humble beginnings. With notes of cherry, oak and vanilla, BatchHouse Distillery crafts a bold Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey that graces the shelves of select locations in Colorado.
“It took about 3 ½ years to get the recipe right,” Greg reminisces. “It was very much grassroots. We actually started in the backyard of a house in Sedalia. From that, we paid homage to the small shed we were doing our batches out of. That is how we came up with the name, BatchHouse.”
New distillers often begin with vodka, but Greg jumped into the beautiful complexities of bourbon whiskey from the very start. He shares, “Bourbon is in my blood. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, it’s part of me as a person, deep down. I didn’t know it. I had to discover it. Then the passion grew. I toured the bourbon trail a bunch when I was younger and worked out there too. It spoke to me more than a clear spirit. The robustness, the depth in the flavors are so fascinating to me—all the different facets. The different grains and materials you can use to change those flavor profiles are so fascinating. That’s why I stuck with bourbon.”
Greg attributes BatchHouse Distillery's success to his team: “We’ve been fortunate to start with the right people.”
Outside of great passions and a successful music career, Greg knows the people in his life are the most important. His wife, Anya, and son, Logan, are what life is all about for him. Anya is his COO, while his business partner, Ken Hoyt, is the CTO. The three of them carry the vision of BatchHouse Distillery.
Greg explains the heart behind their current selection: “Our Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey is a collaboration. This particular product is a combination where we are using Colorado grains and Kentucky water. A lot of people are using Colorado grains and Colorado water. We do a collaboration with the limestone water from Kentucky.”
“Ken being from Colorado and me being from Kentucky, we wanted to have that collaborative sort of feel come across in the product as well. That’s why we have the Colorado grains and Kentucky water. It represents where we’re each coming from.”
“We want to be a household name, but we don’t want to sacrifice any integrity,” Greg explains. “We view ourselves as more of a sipping whiskey and boutique product.” With integrity at the helm of their values, Greg and his team are selective in scaling with wisdom.
“I’m kind of relentless in my approach to things when I’m passionate about them. I don’t know how to do anything part-time. It’s just all in. That’s just what it is. I’m committed to my commitments,” Greg shares about his commitments to both his business and family.
His word of advice to those pursuing their dreams is, “Don't skimp on anything in the beginning. Get your recipe right. Get your vision right. Then, get the equipment that you need and don’t take corners in that either. At the end of the day, if you want a good product, you have to have good equipment to get it across the finish line and then that’s when the work starts. Getting your product on the shelf is where the work starts. Once you’re on the shelf, it’s time to really kick into high gear. Success isn’t getting in the stores or getting your music on the radio. It’s the relentless pursuit after the opportunities are there.”

Kaylee's Love for Pottery Has Gathered a Community Together in Her Studio at Community Mud
Kaylee Eichholz is the owner of Community Mud, a pottery studio in Parker. I had the opportunity to get to know her love for art and community. What I love about this interview is hearing Kaylee’s passion for bringing people together in a creative and empowering way.
She and her team are celebrating their one-year anniversary Sunday, May 18th at Bodega Beer Company (formerly, Fiction Beer Parker) from 5 to 8 p.m. They’d love to see you and connect! In the meantime, I hope her words encourage you to join a class and experience Community Mud for yourself.
Could you please share about Community Mud?
Community Mud is a vibrant hub for pottery enthusiasts of all levels, fostering a welcoming and collaborative environment where creativity flourishes. We offer a range of experiences, from 24/7 studio memberships that empower experienced potters to create independently to in-depth, guided multi-week classes covering techniques like wheel throwing and hand-building, designed to cultivate skills and build connections. We also host engaging one-time introductory events, providing a relaxed and playful space for newcomers to experience the joy of working with clay. At Community Mud, we’re passionate about making pottery approachable and accessible, building a supportive community where everyone feels inspired to explore their creative potential.
What inspired you to open Community Mud?
My journey to opening Community Mud began when I moved to Parker in 2022 and started looking around for a studio to continue to foster my own love of pottery. When I was unable to find an existing studio to join, I just set up a home studio in the basement of my home to keep creating. I quickly learned that what I loved about pottery wasn't just the creative outlet, it was about being part of a community where the joy of creating was shared, where learning was a collaborative experience and where the passion for clay brought people together. I found myself longing for a place where I could not only continue my own pottery journey but also connect with others who shared the same love for the craft.
Driven by a desire to create a space for inspiration, learning and connection, we opened our doors in May of 2024. It wasn't just about opening a studio; it was about building a community where beginners could feel comfortable and supported in their learning and where experienced potters could push their creative boundaries. A place where the shared love of clay would create lasting friendships and where the act of creating would be celebrated. That's what Community Mud is now, and that's what I hope it will continue to be.
What do you love about having a business in Parker?
I've been deeply moved by the incredible support Parker has shown Community Mud. From our amazing members and students to the generous advice and collaboration from fellow business owners, this town has truly embraced us. Even the local government has been remarkably helpful. Parker has proven to be the perfect place for a small business. I'm immensely grateful for this welcoming community.
How do you keep a healthy mindset as a business owner?
Keeping a healthy mindset as a business owner can be challenging. The 'tyranny of the urgent' is real, and there's always something demanding your attention. I've discovered that intentionally and actively making time for mental resets is key. For me, that's diving into a good book, studio playtime on personal projects, or hanging out with my favorite people and dogs. It's a constant effort to remind myself that prioritizing balance, even if it means postponing something seemingly urgent, is a long-term investment in both my well-being and the business.
What is your word of advice to artists?
My best advice for artists is just to try it. Try that unconventional concept, experiment with that unfamiliar technique, sell your creations, or launch that business you've been dreaming of. You'll either find success or learn something essential. Either way, you win.

Local Artist, Dave Reiter Shares the Evolution and Movement in Creating His Oil Paintings
Local artist Dave Reiter has a passion for the story and connection that art brings. Graduating from the Colorado Art Institute, Dave found his artistic voice within the fine arts professionally in 2007. I had the opportunity to meet him at a coffee shop where he kindly brought a couple paintings to show me his work and process.
The coffee shop was glowing from the inside out and Dave’s paintings, Ever Changing But Always the Same and No Pretense, only added to the magic of the wintery evening.
“Everything is done in oils and all from original places I’ve been to,” Dave explains. “I’ve gone to [each] place physically… For colors and engagement with the landscape. All the pieces I do I’ve been there physically to engage with what I paint.”
He shares that two details really make his artwork unique. “First, I leave the edges undone. That is a very subtle thing. I do that with the texture, because I want to push the paint forward just ever so slightly,” Dave says. “The second is, I always share the story or the inspiration behind the piece… I call it the stories behind the paintings.”
Sharing these stories is a beautiful detail that viewers can see on his website, within his ads and truly written on his countenance. Dave is a deep thinker and I would even argue there’s a poet in the midst of his paintbrushes.
He goes on, “On the texture side, when I’m painting I like to show the process. I don’t want to eliminate ‘the mistakes.’ I want to show that there was something else and then I altered it and changed it. For example,” he points out the sky in, Ever Changing But Always the Same, “this was more of a pink before the blue and I could have put the blue and covered all that pink but I wanted to show what was there before.”
These details add an evolution and movement within Dave’s pieces. The way he talks about the steps he takes makes you realize there is a relationship within it. “It comes from living with the piece… almost like having a conversation, and then it evolves into a very living thing, a very active thing,” he describes.
Dave also does a lot of commission work. “I actually get a lot of joy out of [commissions] because it’s unique and it’s specific,” he says. “I will go and see the space because it helps me get the concept of where it is going … I put my whole heart and soul into making it the best that I can.”
Dave talks about the power of original artwork. He encourages, “If you’ve never purchased anything, get something small. Get to know the artist. Find out who they are… go to their art festival, gallery opening… ask the questions, what inspires them?” Dave loves to share his stories and adventurous pursuits. www.DaveReiterArt.com

Family Feel, Extravagant Care at Parker Integrative Health
“I felt like I was losing my son,” Jennifer Dutilly describes the terrifying feeling she had when her son was diagnosed with ADHD. “He was starting to become nonverbal. He felt like he couldn’t stand in front of a classroom or talk or even ask his teacher anything.”
She ended up taking him to Parker Integrative Health where they began brain mapping. After about 20 visits she says, “It was really amazing to see a visual of what his brain was doing when he was doing certain activities. They had it so pinpointed to the certain waves in his brain that needed to be worked on, that it completely changed his life.”
Now, her son is 11 years old with a 3.4 GPA and the confidence to speak up in class once more.
“As a patient, there’s a very warm feeling when you walk in the office. You’re immediately greeted,” Jennifer shares.
Dr. Paola Porrone, DC, BCN, CFMP, FIBFN-CND, Licensed Chiropractor loves the brain and neuro system. She and her husband, Dr. Robert Birch, DC, CCEP, BCIM, CFMP built Parker Integrative Health from the ground up 20 years ago by knocking on doors. Their office now specializes in chiropractic care, neurofeedback and regenerative medicine. This three-pronged approach addresses aspects for patients physically, neurologically and metabolically.
“The biggest thing is number one, there’s always hope. If you’ve been told you have to have a surgery or you have to do this or you have to live with this, we’re not comfortable with that. We’re going to do everything we can to find a solution for you,” Dr. Paola emphasizes the motivation behind their practice.
They believe in serving their patients in a way that helps advocate for their health. At every turn, Dr. Paola believes that hope rests within the phrase, “we can try.” This is one of the biggest reasons Jennifer returned to them in 2023 due to her own medical needs.
“I was diagnosed in November 2023 with stage 2 breast cancer. And I immediately thought of this clinic. I thought, I need to sit down and completely redo my nutrition. When you hear a cancer diagnosis, everything feels out of your control and so much information is thrown at you.” She shares, “I just thought, this is the first place I wanted to land. So, immediately Dr. Paola got me set up with nutrition.”
“From there, I was able to have a double mastectomy and get rid of all my cancer, so I was lucky in that regard. But what came with that was five reconstruction surgeries that were super tough. Each time you have anesthesia, it takes 12 months for it to get out of your body and I had five surgeries last year in 2024.”
Jennifer shares that Parker Integrative Health was an amazing complement to her cancer treatment plan and surgery recovery. She explains, “They really worked with therapies, supplements, nutrition, making sure I was in alignment, really helping me regain my body again… they fine tuned it for me. It wasn’t a cookie-cutter approach to medicine. It was a very individualized process and journey that they were willing to work with.”
That is what gave Jennifer the passion to work at Parker Integrative Health where she now is the Director of Clinical Growth. She and Dr. Paola also describe how intuitive Dr. Robert is within his practice. Dr. Paola says, “He sees, hears and feels everything!”
Dr. Paola is an explorer of medicine and recovery. “We just keep discovering new things, educating ourselves.” Just to highlight a few, Parker Integrative Health provides decompression, PEMF therapy, shockwave therapy, and neurofeedback. Their approach is holistic and comprehensive. To book a consultation call 303.841.9565 or visit www.ParkerIntegrativeHealth.com

Improve Your Wellness With the Right Mattress at Snooze
“We do things a little differently at Snooze. Instead of coming in and laying on every rectangle in the store, we use technology to help you find the right mattress,” Owner of Snooze Mattress Company in Castle Rock and Parker, Keith Chambers talks about their pressure mapping system. “It has 1,700 pressure sensors in it. When you lay down on it, it takes a map of your body. Based on the pressure that you put down on the mattress, it takes a measurement and then runs an algorithm that makes a recommendation for spinal alignment and for comfort,” he shares.
With 30 years of experience in healthcare running ambulatory surgery centers, Keith has a passion to help and serve his clientele.
“Our goal is to get people into deep restorative sleep and improve their lives,” he says. “Another thing that has been a big game changer is the adjustable base… You can raise your head up or your feet up. Just raising your head sixty-eight degrees takes ten to fifteen pounds of pressure off your head and sinus. Raising your feet up eight to ten degrees takes fifteen percent of pressure off your low back, feet and spine.”
Keith and his wife Bobbi talk about the importance of sleep. Keith explains, “Deep restorative sleep is about spinal alignment. Our backs are curved, but we tend to sleep flat. Whereas if you raise your feet and head up it aligns your spine better.”
Bobbi also talks about how, “You have to follow and listen to your body. When you’re waking up sore, when you’re waking up not rested. It’s like, what do you gotta do to figure this out?”
Their mission is to bring a solution to help people sleep better, to improve their lives and live without pain.
“This is a sleep shop, not just a mattress store… We don’t call our employees sales associates, we call them sleep coaches,” Keith remarks. It’s all about discovering what fits best for each client.
With white-glove delivery, 90 to 120 day comfort trial periods and 10 to 25 year guarantees, depending on the mattress, Keith and Bobbi run Snooze Mattress Company with high integrity, transparency and honesty.
As members of both Chambers of Commerce in Parker and Castle Rock, they also prioritize community involvement. Both family and community are important to them.
Schedule a pressure mapping session at SnoozeMattressCompany.com. They also welcome walk-ins.

Poonam Moore Shares Her Story Behind Poonam's By Design And Her Legacy That's Still Being Written
Poonam “Pam” Moore is an award-winning interior designer, remodeling general contractor and the founder of Poonam’s By Design. You may recognize her from HGTV’s Rico to the Rescue, 100 Day Hotel Challenge and more to come in 2025. (Hint, hint, keep an eye out.) With local stores in Park Meadows and Southlands, we had a chance to meet in person and hear a little bit about her story.
When asked about her values, Pam responds, “I’m very much a God-fearing girl. I have always believed in spiritual life and balance of that. I live in that space of gratitude, daily gratitude, because really knowing where I came from, knowing how I grew up and knowing where I am at now, it's a very ‘pinch me’ moment. It's all the things and beyond that I ever would have dreamt of as a girl.”
Born in Fiji, Pam moved to Los Angeles, California when she was eight years old. Her mom worked two jobs to support their family. Pam describes, “My mom is a fighter. She's strong and she's ‘family first.’” She attributes her mom’s hard work to building a legacy which is something she is intentional to continue.
The qualities Pam shares about her mom are the same qualities she exemplifies during our short time together. The passion and support she shows for her team as well as her family is beaming.
One of her project managers, Elizabeth Moore, says, “She tells me to never limit myself and never stay in the box. If I have more than one idea, she’s always supported me. She breaks the box and makes the box bigger.”
As a little girl, Pam was always a big dreamer. She reflects, “I always saw something beyond. I always tried to reach for whatever I couldn’t see. Even when I was in school, I knew I would do this.”
Coming from a background of poverty and abuse, Pam talks about Oprah as someone who influenced her. She explains, “[Oprah] didn’t let [anything] make her a victim. She actually used [it] as her grit. She used [it] as her fuel. I'm the same exact way. I'm very optimistic. I decided all the things that I've been through in my life were going to give me grit. And I was going to live out this great life and teach my daughters that nothing can stop them.. nothing.. only they can stop them.”
Pam also found great inspiration in her aunt who worked hard and found success for herself. “I looked at people who struggled. I looked to people’s stories to find a common thread to see that there was hope.”
As a minority business owner and female contractor in a man’s world, Pam is striking milestones. She holds herself and her team in full confidence based on hard work and grit. Rather than limit herself to a singular expertise, she broke both barriers and became an interior designer and remodeling general contractor.
It’s due to Pam’s vision for impossible things that gave her clarity in her career to combine these two trades. She says, “I was thinking about building when I was becoming a designer, and there was no such thing as a design-build back then. Either you were a designer or you were a builder. There was not a combination of the two and really to today there is not a combination of the two.”
By developing the two skill sets in tandem, Pam has carved a precise path for herself and her team. Her eye for a project enters dimensions within both remodeling builds and interior design. So whether you want to renovate or elevate your space, this creates a smoother project overall. You don’t have to hire a contractor and then bring in an interior designer after. Poonam’s By Design takes the entire project in a fierce stride and they see every project to full satisfaction and completion.
“Whether you want to upgrade all your light fixtures and give it a whole new look. Do drapery, window treatments, whatever it is, we do everything ‘home.’ We can do as little or as much as you want to kind of elevate your spaces. Wall treatments, light fixtures, furnishings and accessories… We do kitchens, baths, whole house remodels... most of our jobs end up becoming whole house remodels,” she states.
Married 29 years to her husband, Everett, who is a retired Denver police officer, Pam expresses, “He’s my entire rock. He’s my biggest cheerleader… We built everything we have together.” With a family of four daughters and three grandchildren, her advice is to, “Live your best life and do what you want. Don’t listen to other people’s expectations.”
She encourages those who are looking for that push to pursue their dreams. “You can't wait for the right moment because there's never going to be a right moment. You can't wait for someone to tell you it's time. No one's going to tell you it's time. So, if you want to do something, focus in, put your faith out there, believe in yourself, believe in something bigger and just start taking the steps... put the work into it. Nothing is going to come easy. You have to put the work into it. Everything takes grit and work… Learn your lessons. Keep it moving. That’s how you do it.”

Abby Watkins Knows How to Bring a Photoshoot to Life and Capture Your Story
“The best advice I ever received was, ‘put your camera in manual mode and go out and get frustrated,’ and so that’s what I did,” Abby Watkins, head photographer at Abby Watkins Photography, LLC reflects on her first steps as a photographer.
It was her dream to be a photographer, but advice from her dad led her down the path toward becoming an elementary school teacher with a minor in Spanish. It wasn’t until Abby was established as a teacher, married and growing a young family that she revisited her original passion.
Abby’s husband, Jim, bought her a camera for Christmas in 2010 and that began a brand new era for her. She shares, “I just started playing around with it. If I didn’t know what something did, I would Google it and then I would take my camera out.”
Completely self-taught, looking back, she realizes that all the elements of photography and learning how to use a camera were the easiest part. The true treasure of her business is found in the stories and the people she finds herself honored to be around.
If you’ve ever met Abby, you know she carries a light and vibrance that makes you feel seen and cared about in the most beautiful of ways. I’ve had the opportunity to join photo shoots, and watch her bring out the spark and passion in her clients. Only someone with an eye for people and a heart for their story can do that.
Abby loves working with kids and families. She shares, “The teacher in me… I love kids. Give me a cranky toddler. They’re my favorite in the history of ever! I love a challenge!”
When Abby is out on a photoshoot, she creates space for the story being told and she isn’t afraid of a vulnerable moment. “I love my clients,” she says. “We hug. Sometimes there’s tears. They go through life struggles. It’s really vulnerable when you get your picture taken.”
“You’re creating a story,” Abby recognizes the beauty in her work. “It’s a moment in time that is captured and you’ll never get that moment back.” That’s why when you walk into a photoshoot with Abby, she brings the fun!
Her perspective once everyone arrives is, “You’ve already done the hard work, let’s just have fun!” She smiles saying, “Once you get there with me, your outfits are what they are, your kids are either happy or cranky, the weather is going to do whatever it’s gonna do. That’s all stuff we can’t control anymore. What we can control is being there together, creating this story and having fun!”
Abby has been our staff photographer and head of creative photography for Parker City Lifestyle for over a year and the adventure with her gets more exciting each month. She brings the most beautiful moments to life.
Being around Abby makes you feel like anything is possible. When pursuing your dreams she encourages, “Never say no to an opportunity, always say yes and then figure it out. Everything is an adventure. Gotta keep you on your toes!”
She specializes in portraiture: newborn, milestones, families, high school seniors, headshots, boudoir and branding. You can view her work at www.AbbyWatkinsPhotography.com

Take On The New Day With Aislyn Dermatology
An avid athlete her whole life, Dr. Aislyn Nelson has a passion for dermatology and skin care. Coming from San Diego, one of her focuses is educating about protecting our skin from the sun. Recently opening her brand new practice in Colorado has only enhanced this awareness.
“We really like to be involved in community events… we are a part of several chambers. So we just want people to know who we are and see us as a community physician where people know us and they say hi, and we know their name and their kids’ names,” Dr. Aislyn shares.
Aislyn and her office manager/esthetician, Brooke Wood, take their time with each patient. Rather than rush through appointments, they make sure to answer every single question in depth. Open for same day appointments, they are a direct pay practice with no hidden fees. Their ultimate goal is to be available for patient’s needs when they need it.
“Probably by age forty every person should see a dermatologist once a year and that’s just because one in five Americans are going to get a skin cancer by age seventy. So it can happen at any time,” Dr. Aislyn says.
Aislyn Dermatology provides cosmetic services as well as treatment for skin cancer, hair loss, sun protection, acne treatments, dry skin, mole evaluations and more. They want to be available to anyone in any season of life.
“Time is not static. We’re always changing. We’re always maturing… A lot of times new beginnings can bring on new challenges. I think making sure that you aren’t scared to address them… taking on the new day and not being scared to talk about it [makes the difference],” Dr. Aislyn says. She talks about how in every season of life, we will face new challenges, our skin is no exception.
Brooke also shares her passion for skin care, “As an esthetician, I’ve done it for the last sixteen years.. Just helping people overall have a good skincare routine, getting them that glow that they want… Making people feel good and confident about themselves. That’s what I like.”
Having run track and played golf as well as basketball, Dr. Aislyn also has a passion for athletes.
She says, “Based on my experience I feel there is a real need for sun education and skincare in the athletic world… the focus is always on your sport… but no one discusses the fact you are being constantly bombarded with… UV radiation… Also sweat, dirt, tight uniforms, chlorine - these all take a huge toll on the skin and cause acne, dryness, etc. Athletes need to be educated on how to manage this. In my perfect world, I would work with the NCAA to educate their athletes and I would absolutely love to be the dermatologist for the NFL, PGA and ATP. Until that happens, we are trying to donate sunscreen to outdoor athletic events and if they allow us - be present for the events to help educate the athletes as well.”
For now, as Dr. Aislyn sets her sights on her own new beginnings with Aislyn Dermatology, reach out 719.992.0127 AislynDermatology.com.

Rosie's Ranch is a Place Where Kids Learn How to Achieve and Succeed
“The thing is, I want Rosie's Ranch to be a place where kids succeed… if they can come to a place and succeed and feel successful in life, chances are they’re gonna go out and succeed [even more]...” Mary Mosher-Stathes shares her passion for kids to feel successful and in control of their lives through her work at Rosie’s Ranch.
A teacher for 40 years, Mary opened Rosie’s Ranch with a mission to empower all children. She and her team provide lessons, parent talks, birthday parties and programs where kids with or without special needs can succeed and grow.
She says, “It's so much more than just putting a child on a horse.” She describes the type of therapy Rosie’s Ranch provides. The kids learn how to take care of the horses both physically as well as discuss their emotional needs.
An example Mary provides is with their horse, Pepsi. She says, “Pepsi is a very kind horse, and she has a club foot. So, I ask the kids, how do you think Pepsi feels? And the kids will reply, she probably feels left out? We could probably give her some extra hay, maybe she needs some more alone time…” Mary explains, “They’re telling us what the horse needs, but it’s actually what they need.”
To celebrate the holidays, they put up a wreath on their barn and decorate with lights.
“We usually have a stall decorating party. We send out a message, ‘if you want to decorate Dallas’ stall or bring a special ornament or something, come on out!’ I send a recipe for making horse cookies, if they want to make horse cookies and bring them… and we have a weekend where everyone can just stop in…”
Heavily intertwined in the community, Rosie’s Ranch partners with local businesses like Fika Coffeehouse to service their guests which includes local schools, the fire department, first responders and even the Navy’s Chiefs program. They’re supported by the Department of Education and have special certifications to work with kids that have special considerations.
“Everything we do is all designed for children, everything is lower, we have accommodations/modifications everywhere, we have FM system, whiteboards,” she gestures to all the resources they’ve methodically provided.
Without a doubt their horses, Gabe, Hearts of Fire, Pepsi as well as their ponies, Dallas, Pachuco and Suzy are giving these kids the reins, and empowering them to be confident, feel powerful and take control of their lives.

May This Winter Be Full of Magic and Whimsy For You at the Parker Arts, Culture and Events Center
I had the opportunity to sit down with Laura Nell Borden, the front of house coordinator for Parker Arts, Culture and Events Center (PACE Center) as well as with Britni Minichino-Sikora, program coordinator, to talk about the arts, their holiday performances coming up as well as what we can look forward to in 2025.
A performer for 15 years prior to coming out to Colorado, Laura shares, “We want to have something for everybody… creating those experiences that people can come and enjoy [and] realize that art is a featured part of life.”
“I think the arts in their purest, most influential form not only take people away from their everyday life… but also plant a seed,” Laura reminisces on the importance of the arts. She says, “Art has the power to change people's minds [and] make you see the world [in] a different way.”
Britni echoes Laura’s sentiment, “It creates conversation… that's where I hope art never goes away.”
They look forward to the holiday performances for the energy and atmosphere they bring. Each year they decorate the lobby. “The last couple years Britni has taken over and there is a new aesthetic each year,” Laura highlights Britni’s artistic touch.
“I want people to feel that ‘welcome, homey’ feeling with our decor,” Britni says.
PACE also includes an advertisement for the winter musical. Laura chimes in, “This year is Mary Poppins! Our production team builds completely from scratch this beautiful set up that people can take pictures of throughout. They had one of their painters free hand Mary Poppins in the image. It’s spot on. It’s stunning.” People can stand in front and take pictures.
“The colors, the lights, music, everything,” Britni says. They describe the entire experience as contagious and magical.
Just a couple shows to note this year are the Denver Ballet Theater, joining PACE for the third year, along with The Daddies Christmas Canteen, playing the big band holiday music of Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey.
Britni also talks about how they’re always looking at possibilities to partner with and support local businesses in Parker. Coming to the Schoolhouse Theater for a more intimate show, Boxing Banjo, an Irish group, will be performing in March. And Parker’s very own Fiction Brewing Company will be present that day. With every purchased ticket, guests will get a beer.
Laura is especially excited for the Rock of Ages summer musical in 2025.
You can tell that Britni and Laura truly enjoy what they do. Both started in the box office and their roles grew organically from there.
“It's always evolving… They very much encourage us to restructure as needed, share tasks… We’re very much a team… It’s a very collaborative effort I would say, everybody's always willing to pitch in,” Laura says. “We have a very dedicated volunteer force as well. We could not do what we do without them!”
Year round, PACE is very intentional in creating a safe space for people to come and experience the arts. Britni shares, “We want to be a staple in the community for sure… Allow something for everyone. So allow everyone to have the opportunity to come to our facility and enjoy all the amenities… [be] a resource for people and an outlet for people to come in and enjoy our free art gallery or dance classes, enjoy anything we have to offer.”

Veterans, First Responders and Active Duty Military Benefit from Life-Changing Connections Provided by Freedom Service Dogs of America
Veteran Services Coordinator, Chris Boyer pleads a mission of healing and support for veterans through his work at Freedom Service Dogs of America (FSD). An organization since 1987 FSD committed to serve the veteran community in 2007 and their program is changing lives. They also serve first responders and active duty military.
A veteran himself, I had the honor of meeting not only Chris, but his service dog and companion, Noodle. Chris comes from a long line of veterans leading back to the revolutionary war.
“Noodle right here has changed my life,” Chris shares.
A fascinating process, when the puppies are eight weeks old, they are vaccinated and transferred to local prisons where they spend several weeks being trained by inmates in the Prison Trained K9 Companion Program. These puppies on a mission learn the basics of potty training, and commands like sit, stay, down and more.
“They come back to the facilities the most amazing well-behaved puppies you've ever seen in your entire life. It's incredible,” Chris applauds.
At this point in training, “They’re exposed to real life things like sirens, music, the sounds of pots and pans and you know, regular noises in everyday life, kids and all that… we even have cats on site,” Chris explains.
“From there, we have puppy raisers (and we always need more puppy raisers). They basically take a puppy home to live with them for about a year. They're trained on how to train dogs and the puppies are brought back periodically for testing.”
At this point, it becomes obvious which puppies are not going to become service dogs. They end up becoming pets and most often stay with the one raising them already.
After the raising period, “They come back to the facility where for about six months, they get more extensive training,” Chris shares.
For veterans who have filled out an application and gone through the interview process, this is where their needs are considered.
“During the application process we get to know the veteran as much as possible,” Chris says. Getting to know the veteran is vital as training becomes specialized.
“At this stage of the process, we're looking at the dog and our veterans and we're trying to make that perfect match. Once we make the match, then the dog is custom trained to the veteran's specific needs. So maybe they're an amputee and they need that dog to assist picking things up… they're being trained specifically for that veteran. And they go through a two-week course and they graduate.”
The relationship doesn't end here. After a touching graduation ceremony, FSD continues to bring support and training if needed.
“It changes a life,” Chris shares that this bond between dog and veteran provides, “a sense of calming, happiness, having someone you can rely on, [experience] unconditional love, an unbreakable bond.”
“There's a lot of pain out there. I think as a society we need to do a better job.” Chris encourages us to make a difference in the ways we can.
While donating, attending events and volunteering all change lives, Chris simplifies how you can help. He says, “If [you've] got a friend or a neighbor that's a veteran, shake their hand, ask how they're doing. If [you're] really, really worried about a veteran, dial 988…. talk to a professional about it.”

A Cause-Driven Effort to Get Out and Do Good
Convict Coffee, under the partnership and leadership of Dan Klehm and his sons, Daniel and Damien, is on a mission to make a difference. With an array of traditional coffee drinks, matcha, chais and filthy pops, baked goods and grilled cheese sandwiches, it’s the perfect spot to hang out with friends and feel a place of belonging.
Dan grew up in the Bay Area under difficult circumstances. “As an adult, I served a little bit under two years in the California system,” Dan shares. But inspired by the birth of his first son, Damien, he was determined to change the trajectory of his life. Dan is passionate about helping people turn their lives around. He sees the need specifically for those who have been incarcerated or are headed in that direction.
With 40 years of experience working within the restaurant industry, as a Vice President and COO, Dan was exhausted by the shallow workings of the trade. “I was disappointed in what I saw. Underpaid employees, greedy investors and a lack of commitment to improving the community were what I observed,” he shares.
Christmas of 2023 defined an awakening for Dan. He realized his true passion to create a better structure of success. He and his sons put a business plan together and by April of 2024, they were open for business. They decided together that Convict Coffee would not become a business that made one CEO rich, it would be a mission-oriented effort to better the lives of all of those involved along with four vital causes.
“We dove into Convict Coffee with the idea of taking on four main causes: recidivism, reduction (boost programs that keep youth out of trouble), rehabilitation instead of incarceration and the last cause that is really important to me is that there’s a place where everybody feels safe. People from all walks of life can come together and really feel like they can be themselves… We have this swath of community here where everybody feels welcome and ultimately for me that is very important that that was our mission,” Dan says.
“Our goal is to consistently ask ourselves, who else can we partner with to grow our footprint, get out in the community,” Dan emphasizes that they are on mission. With a full event calendar, Convict Coffee has a heart to gather and partner with the community.
Everywhere you turn in Convict Coffee, you’re reminded of their cause-driven effort. They share the charities they’re currently giving toward and proudly display Prison Art Experience prints that people can buy.
“I would definitely shout out First Crack as being an incredible partner, helping us get started, giving me a lot of advice on equipment and what kind of beans to roast [etc.),” Dan acknowledges the partners and collaborations that have gotten them to where they are.
“Our mission is, ‘Get out. Do good.’ Get out, do good, and that's not just get out of prison and do good. It's to get off the couch and do good. It's get out of your house and do good, get out of your head and do good,” Dan expresses his passion for people in general. “I’ve learned how many cool people are out there doing cool things.”
Specifically, he shares, “Parker in particular, there’s so many cool people that have supported us that have brought us different causes to work with. It’s pretty inspiring.”

Heirloom Pieces to Hand Down For Generations
“A city girl who followed her heart and married a cowboy,” Candace Gilchrist, owner of Permanently Punchy says, “style is more about creating your story.” And that is exactly what she has done through her unique Western-inspired brand.
She says, “In the beginning, I was looking for a way to remember [my dad] and I stumbled upon permanent jewelry.” At the time it was a more rural art so starting it felt like a leap of faith.
Since then, Candance’s business has grown to offer high-end Western jewelry along with her permanent pieces. Her logo with her brand, The Ranchy Armadillo, reaches into these roots. Her husband is a team roper so the armadillo repping cowboy boots and a twirling rope are the perfect syncopation to their life together.
Her Western pieces are timeless and unique in their essence. She explains, “Ninety percent of it is Native American made and then the rest is American artisans.” This has opened the door to support many women-owned businesses.
“They're heirloom pieces, pieces that you'll be able to hand down for your children,” Candace shares. “My Native American pieces usually come from the Navajo majority, I get some Zuni pieces and others that are unique and different, but most of them come directly from the artist so they’re getting that business as well. It’s fun to be able to support that.”

Developing a New Generation of Aspiring Musical Artists
Parker Days Festival was a blast this year and we had the honor to welcome the Kory Brunson Band to our stage. I was excited to see that he joined us in our beautiful town of Parker. Kory Brunson is one of the reasons I found my own personal passion as a musician and vocalist. It was great to connect with him, find out more about his lifestyle as a songwriter and hear about a new program he’s developed called Nashville Artist Development University (NADU).
Kory is a passionate performer, husband, father, friend and mentor. He firmly believes that there is a path to success for those passionate about music and songwriting. Talking to Kory about his wife, Meggin and two boys, Konner and Mitchell is an inspiration in itself and the foundation for how he has discovered a successful lifestyle as a musician.
In context to who he is outside of his career with his family, Kory says, “I’m the guy that gives the dippin' dots, unconditional love, the nightly tuck-ins. I’m also created by God. That’s who I am.” Kory’s success is grounded in putting his family first while also enjoying the art of songwriting and performance. That is where NADU begins. Kory has an innate passion to educate young songwriters and musicians so they can start their music career right and create a lifestyle they can be proud of.
“I want them to keep those stars in their eyes, but not so much that they blind them to other things and realities. Do it the right way. Learn how to be an entrepreneur, learn how to be a business person, learn how to stay in control of your life and soul. Then pursue your dreams. But get the information you need,” he shares.
NADU is created to equip aspiring musical artists with a healthy perspective of success, prepare them for different phases of business and fame as well as know who they are at every turn.
“You have to take time to discover who you are, not decide who you are,” Kory shares this from his own experience. NADU gets into the bolts of the music business. They address all aspects of running a business legally with financial wisdom and integrity.
Kory and his family have proven you can find a successful lifestyle within the music industry. NADU helps you discover yourself as a musician and live your wildest dreams with those you love. NADUniversity.com

An Immersive and Engaging Educational Experience for Your Kids
An Immersive and Engaging Educational Experience for Your Kids
Looking for a fun day destination for your kids? Look no further than Colorado State University (CSU) Spur. Located just north of Denver, CSU Spur offers an educational and engaging program for the entire family to enjoy together for free. I joined our publisher, Joan Dameron and her family for a fun day venturing the campus.
We started out at CSU Spur Vida where we had an opportunity to learn about animal and human health. The experience was very immersive and engaging. At Vida, kids can watch cats and dogs in surgery. From dental procedures to spays/neuters, kids can even hear from the veterinarians during the process. There are also mock exam clinics. The kids can choose a stuffed animal, read their medical charts, then with lab coats and tools in hand, diagnose and help their animal get better.
Vida also has equine therapy on-site, so kids can watch human therapy sessions as well as equine therapy strengthening exercises where the horses walk on an underwater treadmill. All throughout the building are stations for interactive learning as well as a room dedicated to virtual reality resources.
Our next stop was CSU Spur Hydro. The building itself is a work of art. With indoor and outdoor opportunities, Hydro shares our connection to water. Scientists talk about career options and how our city sustains its water and water flows. This building has a cafe with produce that is grown on-site.
Terra was our final tour where we learned about food and agriculture. This building addresses the growing need for agriculture and farming. Kids learn about the science behind food. They have labs, kitchens for culinary classes and a newly acquired greenhouse.
Scientists and researchers are on-site at each building and they are proactive to share and teach in a way that keeps the information moving just as quickly as the kids move. CSUSpur.org/Visit

The Davis Family Restoring Classic Cars and Making Memories
Aaron Davis and his family are a resilient inspiration in discovering what it means to live life fully and sporting what truly matters most. We wanted to share a little bit about their story in hopes that they inspire you to keep your dreams alive for not only yourself, but your family as well.
You like to restore classic cars, how did you get started in this and what do you love about it?
Growing up, my father was always into classic muscle cars, and I guess I just followed his passion for classic cars. Even as a teenager when all my friends were out getting into trouble, I was busy in the garage with my dad learning how to fix and eventually restore them.
I love the challenge and the feeling of bringing a car back from the dead. I love the feeling of restoring a car back to its original glory and showing it off. Tracking down rare hard-to-find parts or fixing and fabricating parts that don't exist anymore is always a huge challenge but with a great pay off when I see the finished product.
Do you have any car shows you're looking forward to this year?
Typically we try to do one out-of-state car show a year as well as local shows and events, but this year the shows I would usually compete in are just too far away for the family to make the trip. We will see what the summer brings, and we are actually working with my son's high school to put together a local car show to benefit their Unified Program in the late summer early fall.
But your true dedication is with your family, could you introduce them and share a little about them?
The love of my life is my amazing wife Erin (yes, we are Aaron and Erin). I'm the person I am today because of her love and support. Erin is a Certified Nursing Assistant for our amazing son Graham, as well as a jazzercise instructor and office manager for a local landscape company. Erin is an incredible mother to our son and her determination and fierceness to fight for what our son needs on a daily basis never ceases to impress me.
Our son Graham was born with an incredibly rare genetic condition called L1-Syndrome. It's a genetic mutation of the L1CAM gene, and as part of it, he has a multitude of challenges and diagnoses like epilepsy, hydrocephalus and muscle spasticity. As you can imagine that comes with a lot of equipment and appointments to help manage these conditions as he grows. While he may not be able to speak verbally, he is the most expressive kid, his sense of humor and sweetness is unmatched for those that take the time to really see it. For all the medical procedures and things he's had to deal with in his 15 years, he could absolutely be a grumpy, angry, upset guy, but that just isn't him. He is so tough and resilient and funny and smarter than people give him credit for.
What is a favorite family memory you have?
Any memories that involve being with my wife and son are my favorite. But seeing Graham light up at being in the garage with me, or at car shows and race events we attend is truly special. He is a car kid through and through, handling cross-country road trips just to sit at a race track, or in a parking lot checking out old cars like his dad.
You talk about resilience, how does Graham inspire and encourage you?
Kids in general are adaptive to change, but special needs kids are resilient to a body and brain that doesn't always work the way they want it to. Graham in particular has to constantly adapt and overcome daily physical challenges along with the everyday challenges of being a teenager. Every day he has to work to be understood by others - mom and dad included! No matter what, his attitude is still loving, caring and affectionate towards others. He has taught us immense patience with ourselves. So much of our life is uncertain or unknown, and Graham has taught us to really zero in on the important things and people in life.
How would you encourage dads with special needs kids when things get hard?
You have to take it one day at a time! There will be good days and bad days for sure, and sometimes there will be more bad days than good. You have to focus on the good, or the bad will drag you under. Find something you enjoy doing that doesn't take you away from the family. In my case, working on classic cars in my own garage is my way to de-stress. You have to find ways to keep your sanity, and staying busy with a project always helps.

Colorado Saddlery and Their Bell Mountain Equestrian Center
Matt Wassam and his team at Colorado Saddlery are already industry leaders in their trade, but they’re taking saddle fitting to the next level with their newly acquired Bell Mountain Equestrian Center in Castle Rock. They build super high end, high quality, long lasting saddles and also provide professional saddle fittings for horse and rider. Their saddles for women equestrians are heavy duty, but lightweight. Their focus is on comfort and longevity so whether you’re a new rider or a competitor in the mounted shooting space like their manager, Emily Honeyman, you’ll find custom fit for both you and your horse.
The vision for the future is clear. “The thing that makes this equestrian center really unique is our tack business… you can come to Colorado Saddlery South this summer, we can do professional saddle fitting for you and your horse, then you can saddle your horse up while you’re here and go demo that saddle,” Matt shares. “Make sure you like the way it rides and feels. If you don’t, we’ll have a couple hundred saddles for you to choose from.”
Their trail rides are endless and they have a beautiful indoor arena with the softest footing. You can tell Matt considers every detail.
Watching Emily demonstrate how to fit her horse Magnolia with a saddle made me aware of how much care goes into their process. Tracing her fingers across Magnolia's back, she explains, “You want that saddle to have clearance so we try and set it back off the scapula. We run our saddles a little bit further back and then the way we shape our trees gives a lot of spine clearance and gives kidney relief too."
Emily also states, “When you have a saddle that optimally fits the horse and rider using Colorado Saddlery state-of-the-art saddle fitting technology, we can eliminate behavioral issues and dramatically improve rider and horse comfort. At the new saddle shop we will also be growing our English tack collection and have experts available for bit fitting and mechanical science behind each style.”
Drama free and family-oriented, Matt has developed a team that cares about the horse and rider equally. Their tack store will cater to both English and Western riders.
“The equestrian community is so amazing. I’m just excited to build our community here more. We already have such a great, very family-oriented community started here, so I’m excited for it to get bigger… more friends to ride with, more people to meet and stories to hear,” Emily dreams out loud.

Embracing Life After Cancer and Chemo
Melissa Grosboll, DC, CPT, CES, makes me reconsider how I view pain and recovery. Melissa is a certified personal trainer and cancer exercise specialist. As a cancer survivor, Melissa declares herself a “cancer thriver.” You can tell by her quick smile and welcoming presence that she lives her life to better the lives of others. She comes alongside those who have been in the trenches with cancer, lending strength and guidance to recovery.
When it comes to healing from cancer, Melissa categorizes recovery in three areas; nutrition, exercise and mindset. Quick disclaimer: this is a major summarization. The true depth of wisdom here is held in the care of one-on-one consultation and professional guidance that Melissa offers face-to-face with her clients.
The first area to consider when recovering from surgery and/or chemotherapy is paying attention to your nutrition. Melissa says, “The biggest thing is to trust yourself.” Very simply it’s best to reduce/eliminate processed sugars, cut out alcohol and avoid fried or processed foods. Drinking lots of water and eating food with an ingredient list you can easily understand is a good place to start. Melissa advises her clients to work with a nutritionist or naturopath. Understanding what foods bring the best nutrients as well as your own body’s sensitivities will help take monumental steps in recovering your strength.
Exercising is what Melissa likes to hone in on next. She says, “Movement is medicine, movement is life. The more you can move your body the better off you are.” The best movement for most cancer/chemo recovery is found in walking. Melissa has a ton of ways to encourage getting 8,000 to 10,000 steps in a day. “It doesn’t have to be done all at once,” she states. From walking 10 to 15 minutes after each meal, to walking around the grocery store before you get your groceries, there are lots of options.
Within exercising it is important to focus both on building strength as well as developing your balance. Melissa highly suggests, “Listen to your body. Take it slow. Use resistance bands and soup cans at first instead of weights.” She also talks about doing suitcase carries.
“It’s where you pick up one weight in one hand and walk around your house, then switch to the other arm.” This method helps strengthen your core and build balance to prevent injuries in the future. Proper nutrition and moving your body are key ways to recover at a steady pace.
The final, but incredibly vital key to recovery is found in your mindset. Melissa addresses, “We live in a world where stress is normal. [We are] very prone to distraction. We look for distraction to not feel a lot. In the face of a cancer diagnosis, people want to check out, go through the motions, [but] stress is one of the biggest contributing factors to cancer.” It’s important to get out of the fight or flight mode and let your body rest.
Melissa recommends meditation, yoga, sitting and relaxing, listening to music. “Being okay with rest,” she emphasizes that resting is not laziness. It’s important to process and release negativity. “Your body will tell you what it needs if you get quiet enough to listen.”
She understands that it’s hard when you have young kids and a family, but slowing down is good for everyone. Melissa has a podcast you can tune into called The Many Faces of Cancer. You can also reach her at drmelissagrosboll@gmail.com or (720) 201-4292 for a free consultation.

Gain Confidence and Embrace Growth with Seed Money Consulting
Sitting down with Seed Money Consulting founder, Shahab Maslehati and two of his business consultants, Sam Heitzer and Daniel Vaisberg reveals a team that is on your side when it comes to business support. Seed Money Consulting is an independent financial advisory. Their mission is to educate, resource and support their clients in tax preparation, business services, financial planning and investment management. Shahab has built a team of elite professionals with high-level skills that serve their clients with excellence while bringing support to each other as well.
Shahab addresses that when it comes to finances, it can be very personal. “More so than anything else, people will tell you about their medical diagnosis, but they will not tell you how much credit card debt they have,” Shahab says. His team is trained uniquely to understand this.
Sam talks about how they work hard to add a level of customer service that people are unfamiliar with when bringing business support. He explains, “Our level of customer service is really unmatched. [We provide] that soft touch that is really needed when people are talking about their issues and finances.”
Daniel adds, “Each of our customers has a direct line to us.” Shahab even mentions an emergency line for those that have time sensitive and urgent requests. Every aspect of their service is thought through to build trust and ensure not just customer satisfaction, but confidence that clients are in good hands.
When asked how to balance your personal life with work, they refer to strong teamwork. The entire team works hard to be familiar with each client and account. This allows for flexibility as personal matters come up. It also ensures that clients will always meet a person on the other side of their request.
Shahab leads the conversation in self-care. He states, “We put in the hours at work, but none of us will skip on our workouts or sleep. We make time... for me it’s the morning routine of lifting or running before work.... We can’t neglect our bodies. We do enough to stay excited and keep the business moving forward.” It’s this desire to keep the passion for what they do alive that makes the difference.
Shahab also takes time to go on retreats with his friends to recharge. He notes the importance of having a growth mindset. He goes hiking, does cold plunges and takes time to reset and come back energized.
“When we are off the clock, we are with family, traveling and having very focused down time. [It’s] very intentional and oftentimes we spend it together,” Shahab explains.
Sam also shares how important it is to know your why. He shares, “We are so mission oriented right now. We understand the importance of the clients that we’re serving and the bigger picture of what we’re trying to accomplish.”
The way Shahab, Daniel and Sam speak is energized in a way that gives weight to their longevity. Their heart is to serve, but they also prioritize collaboration with their clients. Sam talks about a network they’ve set up for their client groups. “Whether it’s holding client appreciation events, getting our clients in touch with each other or highlighting our clients through different marketing initiatives and client spotlights, we really try to connect and not just provide financial services but also provide community.”
Their advice is to be consistent and take small steps every day to make a difference in your life. “We like to see our clients succeed. That’s the fruit of our labor,” Shahab says. For Shahab and his team at Seed Money Consulting, it’s all about scaling your professional and personal life in tandem. They also give back to the community. Within a year they purchased 200 backpacks for an at-risk elementary school. They plan to expand this initiative annually with local partners.
With their customized service and foresight to educate their clients, it makes business planning all the more seamless. Their efforts allow their clients the freedom to become stronger and better leaders themselves. Email financial.services@seedmoneyconsulting.com or join them on Facebook.com/SeedMoneyConsulting

Heather's Pantry is a Light on the Hill For Those in Need
“I challenge people with, 'if money was no object and you could be doing anything that you want, what would you do with your life?'” Todd Bright’s words activate a drive to serve others. Todd and his wife, Heather, founded Heather’s Pantry to fill a need Heather saw. It was only when she got cancer, that Todd became more involved. Heather passed away in October of 2022, but Todd emphasizes, “It was the fullness of her heart that we be the hands and feet of Jesus.” He states, “Without her cancer [Heather’s Pantry] doesn’t exist like it does today.”
Heather’s Pantry goes beyond a food bank. Not only are people’s physical needs met, their lives are transformed by genuine conversation and ministry. During Thanksgiving, Todd shares about how they addressed unreconciled relationships.
“There’s no better time than now to be thankful to God for the people in your life, especially family,” he says. More than one person thanked him for his message and said they were going to make amends with loved ones.
Todd says, “Some stuff matters, but only if it changes lives.” He and his partnership director, Rob Nelson share countless stories. But it all begins with their small moments of answering, “yes.” They aren’t creating any of it on their own, they’re purely seeing the provision and connecting it to the need. It's so beyond a food bank.
Rob travels all over Parker helping veterans, single parents, seniors and more. Todd keeps the heart and mission alive with each food bank to ensure people feel loved, cared for and seen. He summarizes, “It’s not our work, it’s God’s work.”
Heather’s Pantry has grown by tenfold. Since they started in a garage 10 years ago, they have surpassed 18 million pounds of distributed food. They’re responsible for more than six food banks in the Denver area. Their takeaway? Don’t underestimate your yes. In reflection, Todd asks if money weren’t an object, what would he do with his life? Confidently, he wouldn’t change a thing. He says, “Same on the last day as on the first.”

Connecting Youth and Families to Colorado's Beautiful Outdoors
Great Outdoors Colorado has a mission to preserve, protect and enhance Colorado’s parks, trails, wildlife, rivers and open spaces. They are funded entirely by the Colorado Lottery and they are responsible for a statewide coordinated effort to help connect youth to the outdoors through Generation Wild.
Jackie Miller, the executive director at Great Outdoors shares Generation Wild’s vision to inspire an entire generation to play and make outdoor activities an active part of their daily life. Generation Wild aims to make the outdoors accessible for youth and families by providing tips and tricks to get outside more.
“Time outside helps reduce stress and anxiety. It helps kids with their creativity and imagination, promotes self-reliance and helps with their learning and socialization,” Jackie talks about the importance of unstructured play each day. Being outside makes kids and families healthier and happier.
She says, “It’s good for our children to be bored to ignite their creativity and initiate a new kind of play, discovery and curiosity… and it’s accessible. You walk out your front door onto the sidewalk and you look for bugs within the cracks or study a dandelion or watch clouds grow.” In a state as rich in outdoor resources as Colorado, Jackie believes in the benefits of being outdoors. Generation Wild has a list of 100 Things to Do Before You’re 12 on their website to get families started. The heart is to tap into the awe of life, to build a generation that is healthy, adventurous and caring.
They also partner with Children's Hospital Colorado each winter for “Say Hi With a Snowman” to recruit families to build snowmen for kids at the hospital. Kids in the hospital draw their dream snowman and volunteers bring it to life. Jackie lights up as she talks about the beautiful creations. “It’s such a good way for those kids to feel seen,” she expresses.
There’s so much that Generation Wild is up to. Visit their website at www.generationwild.com and follow them on Facebook and Instagram @generationwildcolorado.

Personal trainer Joey Solano believes a better future for you.
Joey Solano is an in-home personal trainer and coach. He named his business Black Sheep Lifestyle to represent the concept of being different and to use it as your advantage. While his journey began as a personal endeavor to help his mom regain her health after retirement, Joey realized so many people reach retirement and have health issues. His mission is to change that.
“It’s possible to rediscover yourself,” Joey shares. That’s exactly what he aspires for in his clients. He begins with getting to know his clients through an assessment and genuine conversation. Being fit in his definition begins with love. “I don’t want to know how many pounds you want to lose, I want to know how many grandkids you have,” Joey goes on, “I think the focus should be loving yourself because that’s where it starts. A lot of times [losing weight] has more to do with lifestyle and being able to spend time with friends and family.” He firmly believes finding out your why behind your fitness goals is key.
After the assessment he focuses on mobility and stretching exercises. “My job is to make you move correctly first, then we go into body weight exercises, what we call functional movement. From there goals can go any direction, build strength, muscle, lose 5 lbs, diet, etc.” Joey cares about time with loved ones and mobility for the future. That’s what it’s all for. He offers one-on-one training, building home gyms and educating his clients on how to reach their fitness goals.
“Nothing beats serving people,” Joey says. Connection, community and perspective are key to transformation in his eyes. His desire is to build authentic relationships, be vulnerable and grow together in that way. His goal in 2024 is to take action. “Don’t think about it. Don’t question how you’re going to do it. Take action,” he emphasizes.

An interior designer's heart for creating an approachable, organic and refined space for hosting.
At a time where quiet luxury is the key to comfort, Molly Coyne, the owner and founder of MC Design Interiors knows how to make a room feel approachable, organic and refined while holding true to complete livability. If you’re getting ready to host gatherings for the holidays, MC Design Interiors has recommendations to create a welcoming and organic environment for your guests. Their trusted team approaches design with intentionality as well as effortless refinement. They have an eye for casual elegance and a heart for hosting and connection.
A mom first and designer second, Molly has always had a passion for interior design. With a background in commercial construction, she knows what goes into a project. Her passion for interior design is found in the language of both expression and functionality. Different designs can evoke unique emotions and influence how you function on a daily basis.
“Molly really does take time to learn about her clients and learn about their lifestyle,” Kim O'Donnell, the marketing manager at MC Design Interiors says. The team at MC Design Interiors cares about their clients and are always honored to be invited into each home and story.
When hosting, Molly finds it important to create a space that is welcoming, intentional and organic. While referring to leveling up a room, Molly thinks of paint first. “Paint really sets the tone within a space. A new paint job can work wonders in making a space feel brighter and more open and welcoming.”
Molly refers to a wall they painted in a dining room that was used quite often for hosting. Originally the wall was accented black. Molly wanted them to embrace that feeling while infusing natural elements to the space. They used a lime wash that brought a chalky depth and warmth to the gathering room. They also used a light fixture made of real shells and different textures of wood throughout to play with natural tones and texture.
For the advantage of working with what you have, she suggests mixing and matching woods. She states, “you don’t have to overthink it. Mixing and matching all types of metals and woods can oftentimes be what brings it all together.” Use what you have and approachability will come naturally.
Approachability is key to hosting. Molly comes from the San Francisco Bay area, and she finds an approachability to a room when greenery, faux or real flowers, pompous grasses, eucalyptus and even bay leaves are added.
“Coming from California and having been outside so much I realized that there's such a mental transformation that can happen from incorporating more nature into your life. I think that has really bled into my interior design style,” she shares.
The key to these natural elements is to combine them with pottery and stoneware. “It’s really big right now, putting branches that look like you cut them out of a tree into a big earthenware pot,” Molly emphasizes.
Molly and her team enjoy creating spaces for people that feel like it was curated just for them. Having an understated approach with color and bold clarity to combine all sorts of tones, natural elements and textures create a casual elegance in any room.
When hosting it’s important to be intentional and create space for organic interactions. Set up areas so that people can interact easily with one another. Make sure chairs are facing the sofa or have swivel stools around your kitchen island so that people can easily turn and talk to each other. Consider traffic flow so that it’s easy to get from one room to the next, from indoors to outdoors, etc. It’s about both design and functionality.
“You want people to feel like you put thought into welcoming them into your home. It’s important to make them feel thought of, cared for and curate a space that feels elegant yet approachable,” Molly mentions.
Whether you’re looking to have formal dinner gatherings or more informal get togethers, there are plenty of options to create an inviting space for your guests. Express your hosting style in a way that is both unique to you and inviting to your guests. Mix and match and let all the elements play off each other. Be sure to enjoy every moment of planning just as much as the event itself.
MC Design Interiors provides residential remodeling, specifications for ground-up new builds, and full furnishings. They also offer smaller design packages for those in need of more specific guidance for a portion of a project. They call these options their petite service. They have frames for when you go hiking, to a nice event or dinner, or simply are out and about for the day. They also have prescription goggles to match your active lifestyle. CREATING A MEMORY-MAKING OUTDOOR SPACE WITH WATERWISE GRASSES AND PLANTS
Colorado summers get dry and water restrictions can create tedious boundaries when planning and designing your dream garden and yard. It takes strategic effort to keep the grass green and the flowers luscious and healthy. That’s where John Van, president of Four Elements Landscape, comes in. John manages the company’s vision, quality, and footprint in the landscaping industry. He and his team have a lot of wisdom to share when it comes to creating and maintaining your yard and garden in anticipation of the Colorado heat.
"As a company, we are always reinventing ourselves based on the new trends, the changing climate and what’s friendly for the environment,” John says. As a full-service landscaping company, Four Seasons takes care of landscaping, hardscaping, maintenance, electrical, and anything else needed to complete an outdoor living space. By taking ownership of every element in a project, they cut out the hassle of having multiple contractors. Their passion is to make your yard and garden an extension of your home.
"This summer, we are most excited about helping create outdoor spaces where lasting memories can be created with families,” John shares. When approaching a new project, they take great care to identify your wish list, budget, and survey the property in regard to slopes, elevations, drainage, and impervious coverage. They even consider resale value as they draw up plans. Every detail is important. This includes picking out the best waterwise grasses and plants.
So, what is the best way to plan out your yard and garden? John suggests xeriscaping, a landscaping method developed especially for arid and semiarid climates that utilize water-conserving techniques. He also recommends automatic irrigation systems, carefully considering your trees, choosing drought-tolerant perennials, and incorporating hardscaping. He even mentions artificial grass as a viable option. For your garden, container gardening is a great consideration as well.
“Landscaping is very much an art,” John explains. “To create a beautiful design, there needs to be depth, texture, and colors to create an aesthetically pleasing space. For example, trees and plants of various heights, multi-tier walls or patios of different shapes or materials, fireplaces, fire pits, water features, and colorful flowers or bushes can really add some drama to your home.”
John says the best waterwise grasses and plants are blue fescue, blue avena, and fountain grass, as well as ground covers such as snow-in-summer, ice plants, creeping phlox, daylily, salvia, and yarrow. If you’re looking for more low-maintenance native plants, he advises toward the Colorado blue columbine, black-eyed susan, fringed sage, mountain mahogany, and rabbitbrush. And his favorite garden plant combination is serviceberry, dwarf mugo pine, feather reed grass, daylily, plus snow-in-summer and veronica for ground covers.
“A person's outdoor living space speaks a lot about their personality,” John says. “Social butterflies tend toward outdoors that mirror an indoor vibe. They have at least two couches, loads of cushions, and a table for eight with a range and minifridge close by. With a setup like this, there’s a pretty good chance you’re a born entertainer. A quieter soul may have more simple plantings (or none at all), and a quiet solitary spot to read. The crafty sort relishes an outdoor space that is full of clever furnishings built from scratch or upcycled.”
No matter which setting speaks to who you are, there are many options for creating a unique yard and garden. Even as you proactively approach the dry bouts of summer, with the right grasses and plants you can enjoy your home and make memories that will last a lifetime in the comfort of your own backyard.

JOIN THE NEW SURGE OF BRONCOS OWNERS WHO LOVE TO GO OFF-ROADING
Tim and Jolie Rodriguez have lived in Colorado for almost 8 years, and they are outdoor enthusiasts. Tim is an avid fly fisherman, while Jolie loves skiing and hiking. But it’s off-roading that brings their adventures together. Before buying their 2021 Bronco, they’d been off-roading together for 18 years using ATVs and UTVs. After being on a two-year waiting list, their Bronco, named Nellie, opened a world of new heights, wildlife, and community.Tim says of the wait, “While many early reservation holders became frustrated with the extended wait times, there weren’t many who were disappointed with their decision to wait it out. It allowed me to plan for a never-ending set of upgrades and customizations.”
Nellie is a Badlands model with Sasquatch and Lux packages. She has a 2.7 twin turbo with a V6 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Her upgrades include a 2.5-inch lift, improved steering components, 37-inch tires, and off-road lighting; her color is Area 51.
“What’s awesome about Colorado is there are so many great off-road trails, and the community is super friendly,” Jolie says. Tim and Jolie’s favorite trails include Tin Cup Pass, St. Elmo near Buena Vista, Yankee Boy Basin near Ouray, the Gulches and Rainbow Falls near Colorado Springs, and Elwood Pass near Pagosa Springs.
Jolie also shares two resources that are great for trail locations and details. The first is an app called Gaia GPS: Off-Road Hiking Maps, and the second is a book called Colorado Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails by Charles A. Wells and Matt Peterson.
Tim and Jolie go off-roading seasonally. They are part of a Facebook group called Colorado Bronco Owners, where new and old Bronco owners share in their adventures. They go off-roading together on a regular basis, usually a couple of times a month in season. "My favorite thing about owning Nellie is the time it allows me to spend with my wife, enjoying our time together, exploring the great outdoors,” Tim says.
And Nellie’s long-awaited upgrades give them a head start to their adventures. “I look forward to exploring new areas,” Tim says. “Specifically, remote areas that are off the beaten path. Nellie helps us get there.”

THE TEAM AT MUSTARD SEED RANCH BELIEVES THAT HEALING BEGINS BY GAINING THE TRUST OF A HORSE
What started as a ministry in 1999 has developed into a mental health program for at-risk youth who have experienced abuse or neglect. Mustard Seed Ranch provides equine-assisted psychotherapy specifically for youth who have experienced trauma. “As humans, we are wired for connection,” says Mallory Nicklas, Mustard Seed Ranch’s Colorado program director. “When that need isn’t met, it can be debilitating.” But Mallory is confident that there is hope in healing.Mallory explains that MSR’s program is backed by in-depth research from which a unique 16-week curriculum was developed to help rebuild trust for at-risk youth throughout California and Colorado. “So many are facing mental health challenges right now,” Mallory says. “At-risk youth are struggling with depression and anxiety. They don’t feel supported in their environments. Many of them are out of home placements. They don’t have an understanding of healthy, trusting relationships because they were never given that chance.” MSR’s goal is to get them out of where they are feeling stuck and bring them to a place where they can take a breath, feel safe and heal.
The program includes weekly meetings where struggling youngsters work with the same horse each time they visit. They get to know their horse by simply being in the same space. As trust builds, these encounters progress into haltering, leading, and later a series of more independent activities until they become self-sufficient.
When the participants can build a trusting relationship with their horse, they start to learn how to do the same with people. It’s as if they have a 1,200-pound reminder that they are worthy of love and connection. After all, a horse doesn’t define anyone by their past or present struggles. Mallory and the team at MSR encourage them to take a positive inventory of their life. “There is always hope,” she says.
Mustard Seed Ranch builds from a pure heart to help. To reach those in need, MSR relies on volunteers and doesn’t charge for their services. Due to a lack of residential treatment facilities, most of their funding now comes from a community effort. They fund their program by sharing their story with counties and schools as well as networking with foster parents.
During the month of May, MSR will be fundraising through a mental health campaign called “Seen Through Horses.” If you’re interested in helping at-risk youth rebuild their lives, you can visit mustardseedranch.org and follow them on social by searching @mustardseedranchinc.

TERRA BLUFFS IS RAISING THE BAR FOR ASSISTED LIVING AND MEMORY CARE OPTIONS
When it comes to that next step in life, you may wonder what looking for a senior community could feel like. It could be etched with confusion and uncertainty. There are so many emotions that may come into play, but what about excitement and adventure, new friends and experiences?
I had the opportunity to meet with Terra Bluffs Executive Director Cindy Burbach and Director of Sales and Marketing Jason Broberg. Terra Bluffs is a senior living community with assisted living and memory care options, and they’re opening their doors this summer in Parker. Their passion is to raise the bar for senior living, and from what I saw, they’re doing that and more. They’re bringing support to seniors that will help them thrive and march to the beat of their own drum in the best ways possible.
Terra Bluffs has the aesthetic that will make anyone want to move in. Their mountain modern design brings the outdoors inside with elevated ceilings and grand entrances. The Sky Lounge has floor-to-ceiling windows that take advantage of the vast front range views, and they have courtyards in both assisted living and memory care as well as walking paths throughout the entire community. The dining room also has live aspens to keep the Colorado feel, and they have an in-house chef to prepare fresh meals daily.
The apartments are spacious, and while some have washer and dryers and direct access to a patio or courtyard, all are open to common areas where social activities and nurses are close by. They have a full activity calendar as well as a dog park for furry friends to play.
The amenities promote independence as well as reassurance for safety. Rocky Mountain Vista Health Center is in-house, which allows home health care and medical professionals to be on-site. While the building itself is bright, beautiful and brand new, it’s ultimately the team that makes this community absolutely breathtaking.
Cindy has 30 years of nursing and senior living operations experience in the Denver metro area. Her team of directors are not only experts in their skill sets, but they also have a genuine heart for seniors. It begins with their core team and values of respect, integrity, hospitality, stewardship and humor. For them, it’s all about the residents and providing top notch care both in health and in love. What better adventure than to experience life with people who authentically care about you?
They also have an innovative fall program. This technology ensures that caregivers will be notified and present at any time to help assist when they’re needed. It cuts falls by 70%. This is the kind of reassurance that each resident is in the best proactive care possible.
There’s no doubt relationships are the heartbeat here. What the Terra Bluffs team looks forward to most is the residents and their stories. “Every resident has an awesome story to share. We want to put their stories on display,” Jason says.
Future resident Lenice Fowles couldn’t be more delighted. “I’m excited about my move to Terra Bluffs, because life is going to be more enjoyable. I’m going to meet new friends, be more active, and be more involved in activities. I’m going to be around others who are in the same phase of life that I am—an enjoyable new chapter!”
If you or a loved one are considering senior living options, contact Jason at 720-814-7949 or visit terrabluffs.com and schedule a time to visit. The Terra Bluffs team is excited for this next chapter and have set a new standard for what it means to embrace life’s next adventure. Some say, “It takes a village.” Terra Bluffs says, “It takes a family.”
“I’m excited about my move to Terra Bluffs. I’m going to meet new friends, be more active, and be more involved in activities." —Future resident Lenice Fowles

A BRIGHT AND VIBRANT NEIGHBORHOOD STORE OFFERS EXPERT ADVICE AND SERVICES FOR YOUR PET
Aidan and Jennifer Gannon raise the bar when it comes to allowing your pet to be themselves and live their healthiest life yet. PetzLove Food ‘n Stuffz is celebrating their 8-year anniversary in Lone Tree. They offer services for dog training and provide an ever-changing array of supplies, toys, safe treats and holistic wellness for your furry companion.Originally from Ireland, Aidan has a passion for nutrition and animals. With his background as a chef, nutrition is the lens through which PetzLove was built. He grew up in farming, and when his wife Jennifer pursued her specialty in pet grooming, it opened the door for them to cut their teeth in retail and bring an irreplaceable expertise to pet care.
PetzLove is a bright and vibrant store with an enthusiasm to build community. Come ready to be welcomed and provided with next-level advice and care for your pet.
They cater to pets in a way that brings understanding to both instinct and good training. Aidan has three tips to puppy-proof your home: Keep a clean space, ensure food is not dropped on the floor, and keep kids' toys put away.
He points out, “You have to understand that they’re puppies, not children. They have different instincts. Don’t leave temptation out for them.”
The second tip is to utilize crate training. For dogs, crates represent security and safety. Crates help with separation anxiety and nerves. Aidan reassures, “it will naturally become their den.”
The final tip is to walk for your dog and not for yourself. Aiden encourages walks as a physical and mental work out, so he doesn’t rush his dogs. “By allowing them time to sniff, they’re familiarizing themselves with their neighborhood,” he says. Sniffing also helps their behavior around other dogs. They may not have the tendency to bark and get wild because they’ve smelled that dog already.
Aidan’s holistic approach and in-depth understanding for animals provide insight as he shares the best habits for pets. For safe treats, Aidan goes straight to the source of nutrition. This is found in freeze-dried meats and raw bones.
“Dogs have a natural instinct to chew; it strengthens their teeth and keeps them clean. Chewing bones releases endorphins and calms dogs,” he says.
When choosing a size for a raw bone, he suggests picking the one that you think is a good size and then going a size bigger.
It’s also that time of year for outdoor activities and water sports. As you take your pup out on the lake, Aidan highly recommends a life jacket as well as a long tether so that even in high winds or an unexpected situation, you won’t get separated.
The top products he recommends are life vests, cooling vests and sun shield vests, and he always has a summer bag with a first aid kit. PetzLove provides bandages, healing creams, salves, eye wash, liquid sealers and much more.
Visit petzlovefood.com and drop by for more advice and timely care for your pets.

Have you ever felt a click or a pop in your mouth as you chew your food? Do you have pain in your jaw from grinding your teeth at night? These are symptoms that oral surgeons have solutions for. If you feel self-conscious about your smile due to an overbite or underbite, or if you experience so much pain that you have trouble chewing your food, Dry Creek Oral Surgery has a plan for you.
“It’s about making a difference in people’s lives,” Ray Lawson, Dry Creek Oral Surgery’s practice manager, says. "We want to treat all our patients with respect and welcome them in, to let them know they feel valued as an individual and show that they are going to get the best treatment in the world—our very best effort at all times.”
Oral surgery involves anything from your head down to your neck, skeletally speaking. This involves treatment relating to mouth, teeth and facial regions. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Dr. Julia Plevnia, Dr. Jeremy Jannuzi, and Dr. Daniel Escalante have expertise in corrective jaw surgery, wisdom tooth removal and oral pathology.
In business for 23 years, “a vast majority of what we see is tooth extractions. More often than not, it’s wisdom teeth for teenagers, or single tooth extractions for young adults,” Ray shares. “If the general dentist or root canal won’t save it, the oral surgeon is the final option to remove the tooth that is causing pain.” They also perform dental implants.
The oral surgeons at Dry Creek Oral Surgery care deeply for their patients. “All three doctors are caring, detail-oriented and have big hearts for their patients,” Ray says.
Dr. Julia Plevnia lives in Parker. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and has gained outstanding accomplishments in her career through military and private practice experience. She is the Joint State Surgeon for the Colorado National Guard as well as the Colorado Army State Surgeon. In 2020, she was awarded the Order of Military Medical Merit. She is also one of the examiners for oral/facial surgeons pursuing their board certification.
Dr. Daniel Escalante also has an accolade of experience through military and private practice. Ray describes him as the “tech guy” on the team of surgeons. He is passionate about top-of-the-line approaches to patient care through new technology. He’s the reason for their 3-D printer they use for surgical guides and teeth impressions. This makes their procedures less intrusive and more precise.
Dr. Jeremy Jannuzzi has been with the practice the longest. Ray describes him as intelligent and an expert in what he does. He’s one of the surgeons who is licensed to do anesthesia inspections for other oral surgeons in Colorado. Along with Dr. Plevnia, he is involved in medical record reviews and is an expert witness for law firms in providing second opinions.
“He has eyes for excellence,” Ray applauds. “He is super intelligent and involved in his church and community.” Dr. Jannuzzi is passionate about his work and people.
All three surgeons are experts and have an entourage of accomplishments to back up their passion to make a difference. If you want to talk to a professional about an oral issue, Ray suggests you see your general dentist to speed up the process or visit drycreekoralsurgery.com to schedule a consultation directly with their team.
“All three doctors are caring, detail-oriented and have big hearts for their patients,” Ray says.

In its origins, tea is grown in green, luscious countryside's that are rich in culture and ornate in their history. History and culture that discovered energy and nutrients in the roots of leaves. True tea comes from the tea plant, scientifically known as the Camellia Sinensis. This plant is native to the part of Southeast Asia where China’s Yunnan Province meets India’s Nagaland region as well as the northern areas of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Left alone it will grow into a tree, but cultivated tea gardens prune these trees into bushy rows that make it easier to harvest.
Tea is recognized by six categories: green, yellow, white, oolong, black and dark. The word that differentiates these categories? Polyphenolic oxidation. This process is similar to the way apple slices brown. Rishi Tea & Botanicals share that, “the art of making tea involves skillfully facilitating tea leaf oxidation, and dehydration, through a series of intricate steps to achieve a desired flavor and aroma.”
The beauty of tea is found in the experience it invites us into, the history in which it makes us a part of. We want you to know what to look for so you can have the best experience.
When we think about tea, we support small businesses that provide high quality tea leaves as well as who benefit the environment. We look into if it’s organic, fair-trade and eco-friendly. We also like to make sure it’s all natural. Tea doesn’t need to be jaded by chemicals and additives. We’re spilling the tea about tea so you have the best tea buying experience!
So, let’s get into it.
Loose vs. Bagged
The truth is, loose tea will always have more flavor because loose tea is made up of full leaves. A lot of times tea that comes in bags is made up of broken down, fine particles of tea leaves. This is what we call tea “dust.” A lot of your store bought tea is going to be made up of this. It isn’t bad, it’s just not going to lead to the rich flavor and full potential of what tea has to offer. We get our tea from small businesses that have both bagged and loose teas.
Full leaves being drenched in boiling water have room to breathe and expand enhancing the aroma and taste. Tea bags also tend to be tighter so as you marry the tea with the water, the leaves don't have an opportunity to fully expand.
Vadham is a recognized and revolutionary brand that ships their tea directly from India. Their loose teas are made of “a variety of garden-fresh, superior quality ingredients sourced from their place of origin. Procuring these ingredients during their prime harvest periods means that (they) get the best quality which have an enhanced flavor, character, and freshness.”
Research is growing as people are discovering the health benefits different teas have. When you have these fuller leaves, you also have more opportunity to reap the energy and nutrients coming from them. Tea is meant to enhance your life.
Bellocq tea has an artisan approach in the way that they craft their teas.
“Even before you take a sip, a cup of tea can transport you. The aroma of leaves opened and unraveled by heat can whisk you into a heady repose, olfactory memory taking you back to the lush, moss-carpeted woods of your childhood. Or perhaps the faint, briny whisper of your first sip swings you forward to a beloved seashore. Another cup, a blend of teas more exotic to you, and you find yourself someplace dizzyingly, delightfully new. It’s this sense of wonder and discovery, and the recognition of exquisite beauty in the ordinary rituals of life, that inspired the creation of Bellocq.”
They meticulously select their teas from the finest estates in China, Japan, India, Nepal, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Malawi. Their focus is on exclusively full leaves sourced from high elevation gardens. Higher elevations ensure the leaves are more responsive to heat.
Loose or bagged, full leaves unlock the key. Not all bagged tea is of lesser quality. It’s the quality of the leaves that define the result of the pour. It’s also best to verify the tea bags are biodegradable as well. Companies like Harney & Sons have biodegradable tea bags for both their bagged and loose teas. And their bagged tea is made up of full leaves. You get the best of both worlds!
How is tea sourced?
Here’s what we look for in our tea sourcing. First, we make sure our tea is fair trade. Fair trade means that there is a fair price between those buying and selling the product. With tea, it means that ingredients are sourced from fair trade farms. It reassures that compensation is fair and wholly beneficial to everyone. Second, we ensure the tea is organic, that it comes from a good environment. Finally, we identify if it’s ethically sourced. We make sure the relationship from harvest to packaging and selling is in good favor and integrity.
An incredible example of fair trade can be seen in Vadham’s approach and support of their tea farmers. As a home-grown brand, they see their farmers as a priority. They make sure that all earnings are retained in the regions they’re bought from and the farmers get a better price. Ultimately they empower their farmers for long term benefits.
Good companies can be found if you take your time to look. We find quality in the grocery store brands as well as with small businesses. Another business we adore is Teaspressa.
Teaspress is female owned and operated, and have been handcrafting their tea since January of 2015 in Phoenix, AZ. Their slogan is “C’est La Tea.” It’s about accepting that setbacks happen, but you can roll with the punches and enjoy the little moments in life. They rally around the idea that “the little moments make it all worth it, so let’s make those little moments special.” They make life special through their quality tea.
Drinking tea is about so much more than pouring water over leaves. It’s a history and ritual. It’s a rich invitation for culture, and it’s a way to support those that cherish and share their culture with us. Here are some items to bring you a little closer into the nuance and beauty that tea has to offer.

You’re glowing, obviously, but is your home ready to glow just as bright?
Candles are often used to create ambiance, warmth, and a pleasant scent in a room. The scent of a candle can have a significant impact on our mood and emotions, as it can evoke memories, trigger emotions, and affect our well-being. This is why we are obsessed with them!
So you’re a candle connoisseur too? Welcome to the club! We’re lighting all the candles and melting all the wax to get you what you need for your next candle purchase.
When it comes to the type of wax, wick, sustainability and toxicity, here’s what we’ve discovered.
What are the top 3 options for wax?
We did some research and these are the top 3 choices for wax that we found.
Soy Wax
Coming from soybeans, soy wax has a soot free burn. It is one of the most popular waxes for candles. They have a pure smell naturally so the wax carries fragrance well. Soy wax doesn’t contain anything artificial and is non-toxic.
Our Black Girl Magic and Wood Wick Wordsmith candles are made from a Pure Black Soy wax. These candles burn slower and last longer.
Beeswax
This natural option is more expensive, but worth the hype. Beeswax has its own subtle sweet scent to it. Though it can be more difficult to hold a fragrance, they have a natural yellow tint that is unique in their own. “Beeswax has a higher melting point than other waxes, it emits the brightest, most warm-toned flame,” according to Beeswax Co. which makes them burn slower and last longer as well.
Coconut Wax
This was the final option that we loved. This eco-friendly, vegan option is odorless on its own. Coconut wax is a safe choice for your home. It has a clean burn, has very little soot and it holds fragrance and color well. Like beeswax it is on the more expensive side, but the quality speaks for itself.
Our Botanique Candles are a blend of Soy and Coconut Wax.
What about the wick?
The wick is what draws the wax to the flame which causes the scent to be released into the air as the wax melts and evaporates.
100% cotton wicks are the way to go for a good clean burn. The other option would be a wooden wick. They are all-natural and burn much cleaner than wicks made up of other materials.
The most important safety note is making sure you don’t choose a wick that may have a lead-core. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the import of candles that may have lead in them in the 2000s, but be careful as developing countries may still use lead in their candle wicks.
Aside from materials, we also looked into if candles are better with one or more wicks. The results proved that single wick candles tend to burn slower and last longer, but they won’t fill a larger room with its fragrance as quickly as a larger candle will. It all depends on how you want to use your candle. A smaller, single wick candle is better served in a smaller room and can burn for a longer amount of time without running out.
Larger candles with multiple wicks will burn a larger diameter of wax more evenly causing its fragrance to fill a room faster. Candles with multiple wicks are better for larger rooms or big events. They won’t need to burn as long in order to fill the room with fragrance.
Our next order of business was to look into toxicity and sustainability.
What makes a good candle toxic?
Healthline wrote an article in 2020 that showed evidence was inconclusive about wax causing any toxins that could harm people. The European Candle Association looked at paraffin wax (which is a byproduct of petroleum) along with every major type of wax. They tested for 300 toxic chemicals. Healthline stated, “that the level of chemicals released by each type of candle was well below the amount that would cause human health problems.” If it worries you though natural options such as beeswax or soy wax are a better way to go.
Overall, burning candles has the potential to release harmful chemicals in the air, but studies so far show it’s not enough to harm people. It’s best practice to burn your candles in a ventilated space, trim the wick and use candle snuggers or dip the wick in wax when you’re done.
Here are five tips for a clean burn:
Tip #1: Trim the wick before lighting
Before lighting your candle, it's important to trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. This will help prevent the wick from mushrooming and causing soot to build up on the glass. It will also help your candle burn more evenly and prevent it from tunneling down the center.
Tip #2: Burn your candle for the right amount of time
It's important to burn your candle for the right amount of time to ensure a clean burn. The general rule of thumb is to burn your candle for one hour for every inch in diameter. So if you have a 3-inch diameter candle, you should burn it for three hours at a time.
Tip #3: Keep your candle away from drafts
Drafts can cause your candle to burn unevenly and produce soot. Make sure to keep your candle away from windows, doors, and air vents. If you do notice your candle producing soot, try moving it to a different location.
Tip #4: Choose the right candle for your space
When choosing a candle, it's important to consider the size of your space. A small candle may not provide enough fragrance for a large room, while a large candle may be overpowering in a small space. It's also important to consider the scent and the type of wax used.
Tip #5: Clean your candle after each use
After each use, it's important to clean your candle to remove any soot or debris. Simply use a damp cloth to wipe down the glass and remove any excess wax from the wick.

Passionate to find beauty in the midst of ashes, I’m not afraid of real life and raw details. Wonder is found in the grit and the dust. I find inspiration when I slow down and notice torn leaves scattered at my feet, telling a story like broken shards of glass often do. I believe words empower one’s voice and when dropped off a cliff, they find wings to fly by catching the wind and bouncing off all the echoes.
Life is meant to be shared and stories are meant to be told. There is power, beauty and grace infused in a vulnerable story. I like to find diamonds in the darkest depths. It’s the journey into the valley that the makings of a crown are found. It’s the courage of choosing your unique path where healing takes place and royalty is discovered. When I look up, I see the stars, even on an overcast night. When I see you, I hear a beautiful song about to ripple into eternity.

Courageous,
Spirit filled fighter.
She wore
Viking colors and
Facial stripes.
With a fierce heart
Her free will unanchored.
Kissed by feathered wings,
Glowing vibrant dreams,
And there she stood…At the edge and in the midst. Captive born,
But freedom sworn.
The wind to her cheek,A warrior’s calling.
